An Orland Park woman was arrested Oct. 8 and charged with animal cruelty after her malnourished and emaciated dog was seen running loose near her home, police said.

Darlene L. Garr, 36, of the 18200 block of Clear Creek Crossing, was charged with one count of misdemeanor cruelty to an animal, one count of loose running dog and one count of expired rabies tag, police said.

Orland Park Police and Animal Control on Sept. 30 responded to a call of a loose running dog in Garr’s neighborhood.

Upon arrival, police officers captured the German shepherd, which residents said belonged to a family who lives nearby, police said. Officers noticed the dog was in extremely poor condition; it was malnourished, emaciated and had overgrown nails, according to the police report.

The dog’s owner was not located at that time, police said.

The Animal Control Officer took custody of the dog and transported it to the Animal Welfare League shelter in Chicago Ridge, police said. The dog was 40 pounds under weight with large overgrown nails and was subsequently treated and examined by veterinarians. They declared that the treatment of the dog was neglectful and cruel in nature, police said.

The dog is still being treated by doctors at the welfare league.

Garr was released on bond and is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 18 at the Cook County 5th District Municipal Courthouse in Bridgeview.
