Seventh-grader at District 103 school dies of self-inflicted gunshot

A seventh-grader at Washington Middle School in Lyons died

Wednesday from a self-inflicted gunshot, police said.

Police said the student shot himself about 1:30 p.m. inside

the school at 8101 Ogden Ave. He was taken to Loyola Hospital, where he died.

His name and age were not released.

Police responded quickly and said that at no time were

other students, faculty or staff at the school in danger. The school was put on

lockdown, and students were released about 2:30 p.m.

The school issued the following statement: “Emergency safety and

security measures were immediately taken in response to this incident. The

student received emergency services and all students and staff on school

premises were maintained in secure locations to ensure their safety.

“Our thoughts and support go out to the student, and the

student’s family and friends at this difficult time. Members of the school’s

crisis response team are available to assist students and faculty in light of

this incident. The school has communicated with all parents, who can contact

school administrators or counselors for more information about counseling

supports and crisis services.”

Lyons Mayor Chris Getty, the Lyons Board of Trustees and all

of the employees of the Village of Lyons expressed their sincerest sympathies

and condolences to the family of the young student.

“This kind of incident is always a great

tragedy for everyone, the family, the students, the school and the entire

community,” Getty said.”We’re heartbroken to hear that this

happened.”

Lyons Police

are handling the investigation.

The school also said, “If you or someone you know may be at
