Dick’s Sporting Goods to open Friday at Chicago Ridge Mall

By Bob Bong

Dick’s Sporting Goods will open its newest Chicago-area store this week in the lower level of the former Carson’s store at Chicago Ridge Mall.

“I think they will do gangbusters,” said Chicago Ridge Mayor Chuck Tokar. He said the grand opening ribbon cutting at 9800 S. Ridgeland Ave. will be at 9 a.m. Friday.

Grand opening events will continue on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Visitors will have the chance to win gift cards worth up to $1,000 over the weekend.

Tokar said he was pleased with the store coming. “It’s been a while, but I’m pretty pleased about it. The other Dick’s I’ve been in have been pretty good.”

He is also still working on landing a tenant for the upper level of the former Carson’s space.

“We’re working on the second floor,” he said.

“I’m concerned especially with getting to the second floor. People might not want to have to go through Dick’s to get there. That might require an escalator or elevator or maybe a separate entrance inside the mall or from the outside.”

Dick’s Sporting Goods offers equipment and products such as exercise, footwear and apparel, team sports, action and racquet, golf, winter sports, water sports, outdoors, rec room, and fan shop. It also carries national brands including Nike, adidas, YETI, The North Face, Callaway and TaylorMade

Pittsburg-based Dick’s was founded in 1948. The company operates more than 730 stores across the country including stores in Tinley Park, Orland Park and Joliet.

The company also owns and operates Golf Galaxy and Field & Stream specialty stores, as well as GameChanger, a youth sports mobile app.
