The Chicago Red Stars would like to wipe away the memories of a season-opening drubbing at the hands of Portland, and a great way to do that would be a victory in the longtime-coming rematch.
The Red Stars (7-7-5) lost 5-0 on the road May 16 and will finally get a second shot at the first-place Thorns (11-4-2) at 7 p.m. Saturday in an NWSL battle at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview.
The league took a week off because of the international break and it couldn’t come too soon for the Red Stars, who played four out of five games on the road from Aug. 15 through Sept. 10.
Three of those four road games resulted in ties, which pleased coach Rory Dames.
“We had three games on the road and got a point each time — in this league we will take that,” he said. “It’s hard to play four out of five games on the road and I am proud of the group. That was a well-deserved break for us.”
Heading into this week’s action, Portland is the league leader with 35 points while OL Reign is in second with 32. The Red Stars are in fifth place with 26 points, with five games left in the regular season. Six of the 10 teams in the league go to the playoffs.
California Times 2
After dropping a 1-0 road game to Cal United in a National Independent Soccer Association match on Sept. 12, the Chicago House thought it would have a home match against the Los Angeles Force on Sept. 17. That changed.
SeatGeek Stadium’s underwent a project to re-sod the pitch because of unanticipated field-condition problems. The game was moved to California on Sept. 16 and Chicago lost, 1-0, to fall to 1-5-1.
The Force-House match that was originally schedule to be played in California on Nov. 6 will now be at SeatGeek Stadium.
The team last scored in a 1-0 victory over Stump Town on Aug. 14.
Look Who’s Back
The Chicago Fire, which left SeatGeek after the 2019 season to play at Soldier Field, return to Bridgeview for an MLS game against the New York City Football Club at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29.
The change was made because the team is not able to play a game at Soldier Field within five days of a Bears home game.
The last time the Fire played in Bridgeview was Sept. 29, 2019. They own a 101-54-74 mark there.
The Fire were 6-14-5 in the first 25 games of the season. New York was 10-8-5 in its first 23 games.
