Brother Robert May, St. Laurence Hall of Famer

Brother Robert Liguori May, C.F.C. was an Edmund Rice Christian Brother for 70 years, but he was best known for his 26 years of service at St. Laurence High School.
Brother May died Jan. 30 at age 87.
He was an active member of the St. Laurence community from 1978 to 2004, holding a variety of roles and making many contributions. Many students and parents from that era remember him as the school’s bookstore manager, Mothers’ Club moderator and Band moderator.

Born Aug 2, 1934 in Chicago, he attended St. Sabina School and later Leo High School.
Upon graduation in 1952, he joined the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers. He enrolled at Iona College, New Rochelle N.Y., majoring in English and graduating in 1956.
Brother May taught in Iona Grammar School, New Rochelle; Brother Rice High School, Chicago, and St. Laurence High School, Burbank, where he was inducted into their Hall of Fame.
He earned a master’s degree in Diagnosis and Treatment of Reading Difficulties, and founded the remedial reading programs at both Brother Rice and St. Laurence.
He also served as Novice Master, training future Brothers for seven years.
He retired in 2005, moving into Marian Village retirement home, Homer Glen. He served there on the Resident Council Board, was sacristan and Eucharistic minister, helped in the deli and called bingo and other games.
Brother May was the son of the late Mary Anna May and late Noman Albert May. He is survived by many Christian Brothers, many friends and graduates from the schools, and friends at Marian Village, especially John and Debbie Scarpa, who helped during his declining health.
Services were Feb. 4 at Marian Village. Interment was Feb. 5 at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Worth. Arrangements by Robert J. Sheehy & Sons, Orland Park.
