Campaign 2020: 11 elected officials endorse Newman in primary

Marie Newman’s bid to win the Democratic nomination in the new 6^th Congressional District picked up steam Tuesday when 11 elected officials in Cook and DuPage counties announced they were endorsing her in the June primary over fellow incumbent Sean Casten.

“Congresswoman Marie Newman has been a very strong and effective advocate for Chicago Ridge and surrounding communities,” said Chicago Ridge Mayor Chuck Tokar. “She has helped to secure funding that enables us to keep our streets in good condition, repair our other infrastructure, and assist our seniors. She also cares about protecting our environment, an issue that is very important to myself and many others. I strongly endorse Congresswoman Newman’s re-election.”

“We need a champion in Bremen Township that will bring together all levels of government to solve difficult problems, and I know Marie Newman will be that leader,” said Bremen Township Supervisor Kathryn Straniero. “Together we can increase access to transportation, cut expensive health care costs, and expand services to our most vulnerable neighbors across the southwest and western suburbs.”

“When I first met Marie Newman, she was fighting alongside the group Stop Sterigenics to address carcinogenic emissions and to hold a well-known polluter accountable in the western suburbs. Now, she continues to lead in Congress and bring federal dollars home to the area. Marie is a doer, not just a talker,” said Darien Alderman Tom Chlystek. “I know when she’s re-elected she will continue fighting hard every day for the residents of the 6th District.”

“I’m thrilled to have the backing of colleagues at all levels of government,” said Newman, who was first elected to Congress from the 3^rd District in 2020. “I can’t wait to continue our close partnership from Oak Forest to Elmhurst, and everywhere in between, as we continue to deliver real results for all across the 6th District.”

The full list of endorsers includes: Jose Nevarez, mayor of Merrionette Park; Lou Gale, La Grange trustee; Frank Aguilar, Cook County commissioner; state Senator Emil Jones III; Bridgeview Mayor and state Senator Steve Landek; state Representative Mike Zalewski; Mike Porfirio, Lyons Township trustee; and Chakena Perry, Metropolitan Water Reclamation District commissioner.
