Ukrainian churches seeking donations
By Bob Bong
Relief efforts for Ukrainians caught in the invasion of their country by Russian military forces have begun at two Ukrainian churches in Palos Park.
Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church is collecting humanitarian aid for Ukraine that will be shipped by air to Poland, which has taken in thousands of Ukrainian civilians displaced by the attack on their country.
Donations can be brought to the church, at 8410 W. 131st St. in Palos Park, to Chicago Bridge, at 6725 W. Belmont Ave. in Chicago, or to 1645 Hicks Road, Unit K, in Rolling Meadows.
A list of what supplies are needed is posted on the church’s Facebook page.
The nearby Nativity Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church will be selling food this weekend to raise money for the Ukrainian military to aid in their fight for their freedom.
Oksana Nagirna said ethnic delicacies such as pierogis, stuffed cabbage and crepes will be available Saturday and Sunday at the church, 8530 W. 131st St. in Palos Park. Food items will be on sale from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“All of the money will be sent to help the Ukrainian military,” she said.
Nagirna said she still has family in Ukraine.
“Some of them have made it to Poland,” she said. “But others I have lost touch with. Please pray for peace for the Ukrainian people.”
