Southwest Symphony presents an Afternoon of Lerner and Loew on Sunday

The Southwest Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of David L. Crane, will present “An Afternoon of Lerner and Loewe” on Sunday, April 10, at 4 p.m. at Trinity Christian College’s Ozinga Auditorium, 6601 W. College Drive, Palos Heights.

Favorite selections will be played from “Camelot,” “Gigi,” “Brigadoon,” “Paint Your Wagon,” and “My Fair Lady.”

The afternoon will feature two Chicago soloists, Dana Campbell, soprano, and Brad Jungwirth, baritone. Vocals will be rounded out by the Moraine Chorale led by Nicholas Thomas, director.

Campbell is making her SSO debut. Having made her professional debut with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra, she has since been a guest artist with Virtuosi di Toronto, soprano soloist in “Handel’s Messiah” with Toronto Classical Singers and Talisker Players, and a featured artist with the Kenosha Symphony Orchestra. With Toronto Operetta Theatre, she sang the title role of Gonzalo Roig’s zarzuela “Cecilia Valdes.”

For the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Campbell appeared in their celebrated productions of “Porgy and Bess,” and understudied the role of Addie Parker in their production of Charlie Parker’s “Yardbird.” With Maestro Robert Trevino and his Millennium Chamber Players, she undertook, the roles of Female Chorus in Britten’s “The Rape of Lucretia,” and Mimì in Puccini’s “La Bohème.” Campbell appeared in concert with the AIMS Festival Orchestra in Graz, Austria, under the baton of Edoardo Müller, and has sung Mimì for Maestro Joseph Rescigno and La Musica Lirica in Novafeltria, Italy.

Campbell performs frequently with the South Shore Opera Company of Chicago.

Jungwirth has been described by critics as “a muscular baritone with an evocatively dark instrument” and has been praised for his “dulcet and lyrical” voice and “no-holds-barred intensity.” He sang with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Louis Langrée, performing Schönberg’s “A Survivor from Warsaw.” These concerts were broadcast throughout the Ohio area, and recorded for digital release.

Operatic performances include Beethoven’s “Fidelio” with the Shippensburg Music Festival conducted by Robert Trevino, Bizet’s “Carmen” with Michigan’s Soo Opera Theater and in the Peter Brooks’ adaptation, “La tragédie de Carmen,” for Chicago’s CUBE Ensemble. He also sang in Verdi’s “La Traviata,” “The Yeomen of the Guard,” “The Student Prince,” Walton’s “The Bear,” “La Bohéme,” “Le nozze di Figaro,” and “Carmen.”

Jungwirth is on the faculty of Lake Forest College.

Thomas is an Associate Professor of Music at Moraine Valley Community College where, in addition to directing the Moraine Chorale and Chamber Singers, he teaches Class Piano I and II, Applied Piano lessons, and Keyboard Skills, which is part of the AFA – Music degree music theory sequence. Thomas is chairman of the Fine Arts and Humanities Department, which includes the Music, Art, Digital Art, Humanities, Philosophy, and Theater program and is comprised of more than 85 faculty members.

Ticket prices are $7 for students, $18 to $23 for seniors, adults $23 to $28, children 10 and under are free.
