April showers bring May garage sales. I’m glad our neighborhood has lots of them coming up. These sales give people a chance to connect with their neighbors, sell their stuff and hunt for treasures.

Here’s a reminder about the 26th Annual Community Yard Sale on Friday May 13, Saturday, May 14 and Sunday, May 15. I first mentioned this a couple of weeks ago. It is going to be big. The entire block of 4300 W. Marquette along with the 6300 to 6500 blocks of South Kilbourn, Kenneth, Kostner, Kolin, Kildare and Tripp, will be participating.

The event starts at 8 a.m. and goes to 5 p.m. Sellers have asked that people do not double park on streets or block alleys and garages. It is better to park nearby and walk up and down the sidewalks.

St. Mary Star of the Sea Parish will be having a rummage sale on Saturday, May 14 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The sale will take place in their parking lot at 6435 S. Kilbourn. If you are interested in selling, the cost is $25 for two parking spaces. Call for more information at (773) 767-1246.

Here’s a heads up. Our neighbors on the 6600 block of South Karlov are having a block sale on Friday, June 3, Saturday, June 4 and Sunday, June 5 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Neighbor Marie B. said, “Everyone is invited to check it out and go home with some great bargains.”

If you are interested in having your own yard sale, you need to get a permit from your alderman. Permits are free. You may have two sales per year between April 1 and Oct. 1. Contact 13^th Ward Ald. Marty Quinn at 6500 S. Pulaski, second floor, (773) 581-8000; or 23^rd Ward Ald. Silvana Tabares at 6247 S. Archer, (773) 582-4444. Call them for office hours. Bring a photo ID or proof of address.

The West Lawn Branch Library, 4020 W. 63rd St., will be showing the movie Sing 2 on Saturday, May 14 at 2 p.m. This movie is suitable for all ages. Registration is required. Call (312) 747-7381.

The library will be hosting a family craft night on Wednesday, May 18 from 6 to 7 p.m. Call the library by May 17 to register for this event. All are welcome.

Are you or do you know a young person between the ages of 16 and 18 years old? There are paid library internships available through a program offered by the One Summer Chicago organization. Teens can work at West Lawn and other library branches and get paid $15 per hour during the summer starting on July 5 and ending Aug. 13. Apply at onesummerchicago.org.

The Calvary Lutheran Church Senior Club will have their next lunchtime get together at noon on May 17 at the church, 6149 S. Kenneth. Bring a sandwich and a few dollars for bingo. Desserts and coffee will be provided. Call Elaine at (773) 424-3031 for more information. All are welcome to join this fun and lively group of seniors.
