Summer fun’s just begun at the library

“School’s Out for Summer” on Tuesday, June 14 for Chicago Public Schools. With that, students will need some fun things to do, and I have heard of just the place.

There is fun brewing this summer over at the Archer Heights Branch Library.

Some of the weekly children’s programs there are:

• Crafts for ages 5 and up;
• Story Time in the park (held at Archer Park) for ages 2-5;
• Curious kids club for ages 7 and up; and much more.

These weekly programs require registration online. There are specific daily events, as well, running from June 27 through Aug. 14 and including some events for adults. There will even be a field trip to the Art Institute on July 15.

The full list of activities will cover two pages, so I suggest you visit the library, 5055 S. Archer. It truly is a wonderful place. To view online events, go to chipublib.org, click on Events at the Archer Heights location.

The students of Peck School celebrated Spirit Week this past week. Every day was a different theme for dress up, including class colors, favorite sports teams, favorite super heroes and crazy hair. Sounds like a lot of fun.

Also, there is some construction occurring on the parking lot. Rumor has it, and this is purely rumor, that it may be a play lot. Will find out soon.

We are in the middle of spring, and it’s the perfect time to do some cleaning. The St. Vincent de Paul Society bundle weekend is back at the St. Turibius Church parking lot on Saturday, June 25 from 3 to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, June 26 from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Gently used clothing and household items would be appreciated. Please, no toys or furniture. There will be help for unloading only during the hours listed.

The society’s food pantry is also asking for bottles of ketchup and cooking oil during June. These donations can be placed in the box in the vestibule of the church or at the rectory during normal business hours.

It’s been too long since I have donated to the pantry, so I think I will pick up some ketchup (as long as it is not used on hot dogs! tee-hee).

Classic cars will be on display to our west (in the Garfield Ridge neighborhood) this Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. They will be located on Archer, between Nashville and Normandy. It’s fun for the whole family. Food vendors will also be available.

Parking for classic vehicles may be found at the Jiffy Lube (Archer/Nashville) or the MacNeal Medical Center at Natoma. Live music will also be located outside of the former Lindy’s chili.

Flag day is this Tuesday, June 14. This day commemorates the date when the United States approved the design for its first national flag. Don’t forget to display our American Flag proudly.

Happy Birthday to Kelly Altobelli on June 12. She and I go back awhile, attending grade school at St. Turibius.
