Area Sports Roundup: Stagg and St. Laurence advance in soccer showcase

Stagg and St. Laurence’s boys soccer teams advanced to the championship weekend of the Bodyarmor Sports Series showcase by winning games last weekend at Olympic Park in Schaumburg.

Stagg opened with a 2-0 victory over Notre Dame in the first round on Sept. 10. Piotr Zawislan and Kamil Bak scored goals, with assists going to Sebastian Tagala and Bert Jaskowski. Jose Flores picked up the clean sheet in goal.

The Chargers (8-1-1) battled the rain and St. Ignatius in a 2-1 victory in the second round on Sept. 11. Jaskowski’s header with time expiring was the winner. He was assisted by Nick Soso. Bak assisted on Abdallah Omar’s goal earlier in the game.

St. Laurence opened with a 2-0 victory over Huntley. Nate Lara and Diego Lugo scored goals and Edgar Perez had an assist. Michael Calederon recorded the shutout in the net.

The Vikings tied Matea Valley 0-0 in the second round and won the game on penalty kicks, 4-3.

Solorio opened the tournament with a 1-1 tie with Wheaton-Warrenville South, but its second round battle with Elk Grove on Sept. 11 was postponed because of excessive rain.

Other teams that won in the first round were Lyons, Curie, Back of the Yards and De La Salle.

Warriors in the rain

The eighth Jane’s Warriors 5K Run and Walk, an event held in the memory of late Sandburg teacher and coach Jane Caliendo, took place in Orland Park Sept. 11 despite a lot of rain. Edward Distel of New York and Alexadra Holdefer of New Lenox were the men’s and women’s champions, respectively.

Distel ran a time of 19:06.7. Holdefer ran a 22:44.8 and finished sixth overall.

Sandburg Principal Derrick Smith took second and Athletic Director Steven Schanz grabbed fourth.

Kil-ing it

Sandburg grad Hannah Kilbane and Maddy Palmer both shot the lowest rounds in their careers with identical scores of 73 for the Saint Xavier’s women’s golf team at the Jaguars Fall Invitational at SPG Green Garden Country Club in Frankfort on Sept. 7.

Kilbane, a junior, bested her previous low score of 74 set last season after the second round of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Cup at Ruffled Feather Golf Course in Lemont on Oct. 19 It’s her second first-place finish after winning the CCAC Championships on April 23, 2021.

Sophomore Abby Graeber, a Mother McAuley grad, added a career-low of 80 and placed sixth overall.

Sweeping the awards

The Saint Xavier University women’s volleyball team swept the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week awards Sept. 6. Sophomore setter Kaleigh Ritter repeated as the CCAC Setter of the Week, sophomore libero Avanna Martinez won the CCAC Defensive Player of the Week award and senior Molly Hackett claimed CCAC Attacker of the Week.

It is the first time since August 27, 2007 that SXU has swept the Player of the Week awards. That week, Cougars Hall of Famer Traci Looby (2004-07) was Setter of the Week, Jessica Synowiecki (2006-07) was Attacker of the Week and Emily Soto (2006-07) won Defender of the Week.
