There is such a thing as a stupid question

Today is Ask a Stupid Question Day. Officially, this annual holiday is Sept. 28 but is usually observed on the last school day of September, which falls on Friday, Sept. 30 this year. Whose idea was this?

The West Lawn Gardeners group shared some information to keep in mind as we pick the last produce of our fall harvest. If you have pumpkins growing in your garden, don’t leave the leaves behind when you pick them. Pumpkin leaves are not only edible, but they’re rich in iron, protein and vitamins A and C. You can use them in soups, salads or in a stir-fry.

The West Lawn Branch Library, 4030 W. 63rd St., is showing the movie The Addams Family on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. This movie is suitable for all ages. On Monday, Oct. 3 the library will be showing the movie Jaws from 5:30 to 7:45 p.m. This movie is suitable for those over 13 years old due to graphic and gory scenes. The Quinn & Guerrero-Cuellar Service Office, 6500 S. Pulaski, is having a paper shredding event on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. You can bring all your mail and private documents to be safely shredded. Remove all staples and make sure there are no non-paper items mixed in with your paper. Bring it to the area behind the building. Call for more information at (773) 581-8000.

A big thank you to long-time neighborhood activist Eddie Guillen. Eddie saw the huge mess left on Pulaski by some people celebrating Mexican Independence Day recently. He organized a group of volunteers to pick up all the garbage, including the Envision Community Service Organization’s youth group. They filled more than 40 big garbage bags with trash. Thank you to all the hard working volunteers.

A very special thank you goes to La Michoacana restaurant, 5160 S. Pulaski, for supplying free food and beverages to all the volunteers. Your generous donation was much appreciated.

La Michoacana has a variety of delicious treats. My son, Joe, took me there a while back. I must say their homemade ice cream is the best I’ve ever tasted. La Michoacana is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. I think I need to go there again very soon!
