Macy’s grand opening Friday in Evergreen Park

By Bob Bong

The new Market by Macy’s and Macy’s Backstage stores will hold their grand openings this weekend at Evergreen Plaza in Evergreen Park.

The new stores will open in the former Carson’s at 9700 S. Western Ave. Market by Macy’s will occupy the first floor and Macy’s Backstage outlet store will take over the second floor of the former retailer. They are the first dual Market by Macy’s and Macy’s Backstage stores.

Both stores will offer unique shopping experiences with Market by Macy’s offering customers the latest fashion trends and Macy’s Backstage appealing to those on the hunt for a great deal.

The ribbon cutting will take place at 9:15 a.m. Friday, October 7, with Mayor Kelly Burke doing the honors.

The grand opening will be from noon to 6 p.m. Friday, October 7. Activities include gift cards to the first 200 customers on Friday and the first 300 customers on Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. each day. A local coffee vendor will be available inside the store.

Beginning at noon on Friday and Saturday, spin the wheel for Macy’s prizes and giveaways and visit some local food trucks.
On Saturday, a local radio station will be there with a live DJ along with raffles and giveaways from noon to 2 p.m.

On Thursday, October 6, from 5-7 p.m., Market by Macy’s and Macy’s Backstage at Evergreen Plaza will host youth from Children’s Home & Aid for a private shopping event for outfits and essentials. Children’s Home & Aid’s mission is to advance the well-being of children by investing in families to disrupt the systemic and multi-generational cycle of racial, social and economic inequality.

“We’re excited that Macy’s will be coming soon to Evergreen Park,” Mayor Kelly Burke said this summer when the stores were announced. “Macy’s will deliver expanded fashion, clothing and home goods options that residents have been asking for. I am delighted that Macy’s chose Evergreen Park for its first Chicago-area location for Market by Macy’s.”

“Macy’s decision to come to Evergreen Park is a vote of confidence in our vibrant retail community. The new Macy’s location will serve as a magnet for other great retailers to come to our village,” added Burke.

The 120,000-square-foot former Carson’s space had been empty since an attempt to revive the retailer failed in 2020.

Macy’s debuted its first Market by Macy’s in February 2020 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area at Southlake. This fall, Macy’s opened its third Market by Macy’s location in the metro Atlanta area at John’s Creek; the first dual Market by Macy’s and Macy’s Backstage location at Evergreen Plaza in the Chicagoland area; and an additional Market by Macy’s location at Chesterfield Commons in the greater St. Louis area. There are currently more than 300 Macy’s Backstage stores nationwide, and nine freestanding Macy’s Backstage locations.
