Tabares’ shred day was a fun event

Happy National Pizza Month! Don’t we live in a great neighborhood for pizza? There are so many pizza parlors to choose from. There are the big chains and the mom-and-pop establishments.

I volunteered on last week at the shredding event held at Peck School parking lot, working with 23^rd Ward Ald. Silvana Tabares and her staff. It was nice chit-chatting with everyone. We had a good number of people coming to shred. All of them were really nice as well. It was a gorgeous fall day, too.

If you missed this event, yet have important papers to shred, small electronics and old medicine to dispose of, don’t worry. Fourteenth Ward Ald. Edward M. Burke is holding a similar event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12 at the Polish Highlanders Hall, 4808 S. Archer.

Take the kids over to New Life Midway Church, 5101 S. Keeler, on Saturday, Oct. 15. There will be a “trunk or treat” event that will include candy, balloons and a bounce house, to name a few. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There is a saying that the only thing constant in life is change. Well, things are changing again close to the neighborhood. Pizza Castle on 55^th Street is moving to Hickory Hills after serving the Southwest Side for five decades. The move will soon be taking place.

I have heard they make a great King Arthur pizza, but haven’t had the opportunity to try one. Best wishes for the future. I know they will be missed.

Another establishment that has served our community is Polonia Banquets. They will be closing the Archer location at the end of the year. I bet many of us have celebrated some sort of reception, shower or dance at that location.

Another change: if you happen to visit me or anyone else on 57^th Place from Hamlin to Springfield, drive westward. Also, if you are on 58^th Street from Springfield to Hamlin, drive eastward. Both of these streets are becoming one way starting in October. Hopefully it will relieve some of the congestion from school traffic.
