Donate clothes at St. Turibius

Clean those closets quickly, because this weekend is the St. Vincent de Paul Society Bundle weekend at St. Turibius Church. Slightly used clothing and household goods will be accepted, but only during specific hours. The hours to donate are 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15 or 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16.

If you happen to go past the building of Su Familia, 5417 S. Pulaski, please take a look. On both sides of the building there are lovely, colorful murals to brighten the block. Accolades to the artist because it really is a beautiful work.

In helping to keep our communities beautiful a thank you goes out to Justin Gilliam. He and his team from Addiction Recovery Services cleaned up the trash and garbage once again on Cicero, between 47^th and the Stevenson. A thank you also goes out to John Marusarz.

Also, thank you to Envision Community Services. They came out on the morning of Sept. 17 to help clean up the Archer Heights community. A volunteer group of teenagers and young people along with Mr. Montejano, Jr. cleaned the sidewalks and curbs from the debris and bottles left over from the night before.

It seems like garbage is a never-ending battle. Our family still circles the block every day and ends up with at least one bucket full of trash. At least we no longer find discarded facemasks. We were averaging about five a day on the ground.

There are lots of Halloween activities being planned around our neighborhoods. La Michoacana, 5160 S. Pulaski, is hosting a trunk or treat. There will be candy and fun in a safe environment for families.

The event will be held on Oct. 30 from noon to 3 p.m.

On Oct. 29 the Midway Baseball will host its 6^th annual trunk or treat at 5 p.m. If you would like to distribute candy and decorate your trunk, please contact Josie Rojas at Josierojas7997@gmail.com.

Congratulations to our neighbor, Flor Camila Martinez, on her 15^th birthday. After I write this on Oct. 8, I will soon be getting ready for her quinceanera (celebration of a young woman’s 15^th birthday) being held at St. Blase Church and then onto Carriage Greens Country Club. The Martinez family is one of our oldest neighbor families on the block, and we consider them as family.

In fact, most of the folks on 57^th Place are considered family. I would like to thank them for Friday, Oct. 7. Robert and I were invited for a small party, but little did we know the party was for me! Yes, I will soon be turning “Social Security eligible” or 62! We ate, drank and danced the night away.
