Hubbard alumni partied with a purpose

Here’s a follow up on the recent Hubbard High School 50th reunion I reported on a couple of weeks ago. The alumni not only had a fun celebration, they used the occasion to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project. What a great idea!

After reporting on this, I got a few calls asking about the Wounded Warrior Project and where to send donations. This nonprofit organization uses 100% of their donations to help veterans and active-duty service members and their families. You can find out more information by calling 844-659-0310 or by visiting woundedwarriorproject.org.

I’ve been asked to extend a special thanks to alumna Sherri U. for her donation of cookies to the reunion party. Do you remember those big vanilla butter cookies with the ridges on top that Chicago Public Schools used to sell in their cafeterias? Sherri baked a lot of them for her fellow alumni and put them in individual bags with the recipe included. How thoughtful! (A few photos from the event are posted below.)

The Southwest Regional Senior Center, 6117 S. Kedzie, is now serving their Golden Diners hot meals once again. I’ve been told that their box lunches were very good; but now that the cold weather is here, a hot meal is much appreciated by our neighborhood seniors. The meals are served every day at noon. Call the Senior Center for more information about the meals at (312) 743-2031.

I go to the Southwest Regional Senior Center every Thursday at 2:30 p.m. for their one-hour Tai Chi classes. The teacher, Frances, leads us gently and thoughtfully through stretches with flowing movements while standing and sitting. Tai Chi helps strengthen balance, gives you more energy, improves strength, reduces arthritis pain and lowers blood pressure. I feel like a million bucks at the end of each class.

West Lawn Park, 4233 W. 65th St., will host a Holiday Hot Chocolate Run for everyone age 6 and up. The one-mile race is appropriate for all skill levels. The run will take place on Saturday, Nov. 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Get some fresh air and exercise and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate. Call for more information at (773) 284-2803.

Congratulations to Steve Beemsterboer, who recently passed the Illinois State Bar exam. His proud parents, Judy and Tom Beemsterboer, recently let me know of their son’s great accomplishment. Steve now has a position at the Sidley Law Firm. Steve, best wishes for success as you begin your career. Congratulations to Judy and Tom for being great parents!
