Food truly brings people together

As we enjoy Thanksgiving leftovers, we look forward to Christmas. The holidays mean different things to different people, but it seems everyone celebrates with special holiday foods. Food does bring us all together.

Christmas means, among other things, Christmas cookies.  I got a few calls over the last two weeks from people asking for the recipe for the high school cookies I mentioned when I reported on the Hubbard High School reunion. I thought I’d share it with you. Maybe you can bake them for Christmas. Thank you, Faith Gale and Sherri Ucho, for sharing the recipe.

High school cookies: 1 pound butter, 2 cups sugar, 4 cups flour and 2 teaspoons vanilla. Cream butter. Add sugar to the butter, a little at a time. Add vanilla. Add flour. Mix well. Use a 2-tablespoon scoop to form balls of dough. Flatten dough with three fingers to achieve a “wave” look.  Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 15 minutes or until the edges are lightly brown. Makes 3 dozen giant cookies.

Here’s some good news. The Good Neighbor Love Fridge at 6601 S. Pulaski is back and ready to serve the community. It is located behind the Renato Delgadillo State Farm Insurance office. Thank you to the Delgdillos, Eddie Guillen and all who repaired the fridge and got it up, running and filled with food. Visit any time. Take what you need and donate what you can. I’m so grateful to all the volunteers. This is such a great service to our community.

St. Mary Star of the Sea Parish is teaming up with the Save-A-Lot grocery store at 63rd and Kilbourn for a project designed to make a difference in the lives of many people. When you do your shopping at Save-A-Lot, you can purchase a pre-filled bag of groceries. These bags will be given to St. Mary’s, and they will distribute the bags of food to people in need. Thank you to all donors and volunteers for your efforts in helping to make Christmas brighter for many in our neighborhood.

Special thanks to 23^rd Ward Ald. Silvana Tabares for bringing some of her son’s favorite books to St. Nicholas of Tolentine School.  The alderman read the books to preschool, kindergarten and first grade students last week. How fun!

The Chicago Artopia Company will be presenting a flute and guitar concert by the Silver Rose Duo at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10 at the West Lawn Branch Library, 4020 W. 63rd St. There is no admission charge.

Congratulations to Lee School Assistant Principal Kai Murray, who has been promoted to the job of principal at the Shoesmith Elementary School. The Lee School community would like to thank Ms. Murray for your dedication and commitment as they extend their best wishes as you begin your new leadership journey.
