Congratulations to Jeanette Arteaga, who has been chosen as a contributing author in a new book debuting this month. The title is Business Divas and focuses on Latinas in different stages of their business: some just starting out, some already showing success. The book contains 22 stories from women in eight different business industries, seven different states and four different countries.

As you know from past visits with her, Jeanette is a Farmers agent here in Chicago Lawn and hosts workshops and classes for the community at her Monarca Insurance and Financial, on the northwest corner of 63rd and Spaulding. Her tagline is “Helping protect your present and plan your future.” In Business Divas, Jeanette tells the story of her journey, finding out what she wanted to do and how she got to where she is at in life.

“The reasoning behind this is a lot of women my age are lost and so stressed out,” she explained. “In reality, nothing is set in stone. Even if you pick a career and find it’s not for you, don’t be scared. It’s OK to change.”

The book launch is this coming Tuesday, Dec. 13 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Drake Hotel in Oakbrook. To attend the event, sign up for tickets at tinyurl.com/2p944pkx. Jeanette will also have books available at her office for purchase.

Did you attend the Potawatomi class last week that Bruce Sullivan, our new Adult Services Librarian at the Chicago Lawn Branch Library, held online? If you missed it, you missed a really interesting 40 minutes and a great introduction to the library’s Mango software. Whenever Bruce does something like this again, try to attend. I don’t think you’ll be sorry.

Throughout Advent, Lauds prayer, the morning prayer of the Church, will be held at St. Adrian Church, 7000 S. Washtenaw. Join in Monday through Friday at 5:30 a.m.

Rehearsals for St. Adrian’s Nativity play for children ages 4 to 12 will be held on the following Mondays, Dec. 12 and 19, at 7 p.m. at St. Adrian Church. All children of the parish are invited.

Reservations are now being accepted for the Traditional Kucios (fish and herring) dinner at Nativity BVM, which will be held this year on Sunday, Dec. 18, at 12:30 p.m. in the parish hall. Tickets are $35 per person. Please RSVP by Monday, Dec. 12. To make a reservation, call Audra at (773) 776-4600.

Also at Nativity, traditional Christmas wafers are now available through Advent. You can obtain wafers either in the sacristy after the Masses or weekdays at the parish office.

Now back to 1978. Last week we emptied out our Christmas Club account at Grunwald Savings and started our shopping. The first item on our list was a decorative clock, perhaps a cuckoo clock, and there was a store on 63rd Street just off of Kedzie that was running a good sale. The shop used a sketch of a diamond instead of an apostrophe in their name. Teresa B. was the first to identify Begeman’s Jewelers. The reason she remembers it vividly? This is the store where her husband purchased her engagement ring more than 50 years ago.

Now the next item on our list, 44 years ago, is a new item out this year, a pair of Totes stretch boots. As long as we are by 63rd and Kedzie, let’s stop in at the shoe store just east of Kedzie on the north side of the street and see what kind of selection they have. What is the name of the shoe store we are headed to this week?
