Palos Park honors former mayor Mahoney at meeting

Former Palos Park Mayor John Mahoney received a nice surprise at Monday night’s village council meeting.
Mahoney, who was the mayor for 16 years but did not run for re-election in April, was presented with an American flag that flew above the U.S. Capitol on May 8, his last day on the job.
“We just wanted to thank you for your years of service,” Mayor Nicole Milovich-Walters said. “You put in 20 years of service including 16 as mayor and with all the fantastic things that you have done for our community, this is a small thank you.”
She added that Congressman Sean Casten was instrumental in setting the gift up.
“I have no words except that I’m grateful for the efforts of those who recognized me,” Mahoney said. “To have a flag that has flown over the U.S. Capitol is amazing.”
Wegele Award
The Beautification Committee is coming up with a new award that will be presented at the Autumn in the Park Festival on Sept. 16.
The Reta Wegele Beautification Award will be given to residents who make an extra effort to make their front yard or any part of the village beautiful.
“Reta is a longtime resident who took great pride in our village and her family’s exceptionally beautiful yard and garden along 123rd Street,” Milovich-Walters said.
Nomination forms will be accepted through Sept. 4.
Wegele died in 2019 at age 70 and was originally from Florida, teaching on Marco Island and in Naples. She was a residential agent in Palos Park.

Commissioner G. Darryl Reed recognized the finance department for its “robust” financial report that the Government Finance Office Association lauded for excellence in financial reporting.
“The GFOA has developed a complex rating system and receiving the GFOA Award Certificate of Achievement for excellence is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting.”
The village has won it 24 straight years.
“Keep up the good work and let’s go for 25,” Reed said.
