Cite Officers In Battling Against Abuse

The Chicago Lawn (8th) District Domestic Violence Subcommittee on Tuesday night recognized Officers Raymond Piwnicki and Timothy Quinn for going above the call of duty while responding to a domestic violence call.{{more}}

The officers are both from the 8th District of the Chicago Police Department. The awards were presented at the 8th District station.

In honor of Domestic Violence Month, domestic violence subcommittees throughout Chicago hold several events to promote awareness of this issue. The 8th District Domestic Violence Subcommittee chooses to recognize officers who go above and beyond the required duties and general protocol, explained Susie Moya, committee chair.

Long-time committee member Pat Naujoks gave the history of the subcommittee and thanked the officers for their daily sacrifices and commitment.

A first of its kind, the committee was organized 16 years ago in response to the tense relationship between the community fighting domestic violence and the police department. Since that time, the committee has worked in the community to raise awareness of domestic violence in the 8th District and leave a positive impact on its residents.

Moya presented the awards with Officer Elizabeth Antkiewicz, Domestic Violence Liaison.

Piwnicki and Quinn have been with the Chicago Police Department for 13 and 15 years, respectively.

They were responding to a call put through by the victim’s 10-year-old child.

When the officers arrived at the basement apartment, they heard yelling and commotion behind a closed door. After the victim opened the door, they noticed that her face was bruised and her mouth was bloody.

Waiting in the doorway, the officers saw the offender run from the back of the apartment to the front. When they attempted to conduct a field interview per protocol, the offender retorted with an obscenity and threateningly came at them when they attempted to conduct a Òprotective pat-down.”

Once the offender was secured and handcuffed, the officers discovered an electric stun gun taser.

Though the victim was uncooperative and refused details of the altercation, Piwnicki and Quinn signed complaints on behalf of the victim after positive confirmation from her children that the offender had injured their mother.

Both officers were proud and grateful to have been recognized with such an award.

ÒIt’s a honor to be chosen among a lot of qualified applicants,” said Piwnicki.
