MWRD worker killed at Melvina Ditch worksite

A worker for the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District was struck and killed this morning by an excavator driven by another worker at the Melvina Ditch restoration project site just west of Chicago Ridge Mall, according to Chicago Ridge Police Chief Robert Pyznarski.
According to a news release, the incident is being treated as an accidental workplace fatality. Police are working with the local office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to investigate the incident.
Police said the incident happened at 7:37 a.m. at the Melvina Ditch site. A worker driving an excavator struck another worker. The victim suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the excavator was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Both men worked for the MWRD.
The identity of the deceased worker is being withheld pending notification of the family.
